Enermax REVOLUTION 87Plus Gold
The electrical performance of the Enermax Revolution 87 Gold left us with mixed feelings, as it appears that Enermax focused on the 12V lines and neglected the two minor lines. As a result, the 12V lines display excellent stability with a regulation of 1.5% and very low voltage ripple even while the unit is heavily stressed. On the other hand, voltage regulation on the 3.3V and 5V lines reached a bit over 2.5% and the voltage ripple actually surpasses that of the 12V line! Even though the figures are still very good and well within the design limits, this is the first time that we have tested with the two minor lines being neglected to such an extent.
The Enermax Revolution87 850W unit bears the 80Plus Gold certification, thus we did expect its electrical efficiency to be very high. During our testing the efficiency of the power supply peaked at 92.5% when it was being powered by a 230VAC source and 1% lower while it was being powered by a 110VAC source.
Although it is expected that a high efficiency unit will have great thermal performance, the Enermax Revolution87 850W unit does better than great; the unit remains remarkably cool during operation and the largest temperature delta recorded was 8.2°C when the unit was operating under maximum load for several minutes.
It appears that the patented “Speedguard” fuzzy logic speed control system of Enermax is more than just marketing hype, as the unit remained entirely silent when loaded even up to 80% capacity – which is more than 650W of DC power. The speed of the fan increases quickly at heavier loads and the unit does turn audible, although not nearly annoyingly loud, plus it is not natural to have any power supply working at maximum load for prolonged periods of time.
